Tiny Jail Tuesday! Claremore Boathouse/Jail - https://abandonedok.com/claremore-boathouse/ In April 1938 it was requested by Bert Sprangel, the light and water superintendent of Claremore Lake to have a boathouse built. Plans for an $8,000 rock building were sent to Washington for approval from President Roosevelt and passed. Only $5, 969 would be provided by the WPA while the other $2,175 in materials would be provided by the city of Claremore. Construction on the Claremore Boathouse didn’t start until March 1939 under the supervision of A.G. Poppino, superintendent of construction. Built of sturdy and thick native stones with a steel roof it remains almost identical to when it was brand new. What makes this building even more interesting is the story untold. Alleged the boathouse was used as a jail, when and why haven’t been answered. While no records of this could be found on our end, John Dudley and Chester Baldwin both retired local policemen, said they knew the cell was at the lake. They both concluded the “cell” in the boathouse was never used during their careers and hadn’t heard of it being used by officers before them. Former Claremore Mayor and Police Chief Mickey Perry said the same thing. According to hear-say the “cell” in the boathouse was rarely used and policemen would only transport “troublesome” prisoners there if they had been causing disruptions upon arrest or while in custody. Canadian County Jail - https://abandonedok.com/canadian-county-jail/ In March 1905, the Commercial Club submitted a petition to the County Commissioners requesting a new county jail. A month later a resolution was passed to erect a brand new jail but the location was not solidified yet. Architectural drawings submitted by Solomon Andrew Layton, in partnership with W. J. Riley were accepted. Contractor A.C. Kreipke was hired to construct the $18,000 stone structure. Taking on a Doric design the front of the building seems to be something you would see in Washington rather than Oklahoma making it a structure to boast about throughout the county. Tiny Jail Tuesday! Wanette Jail - https://abandonedok.com/wanette-jail/ The Wanette Jail can be found tucked away in the trees off 3rd street. Hard to catch a glimpse of during the summer but visible enough in the dead of winter. Not much could be found on this peculiarly built calaboose with reddish native stone held together by aged and chipping mortar. Part of the flat concrete roof and opening to the small jail has collapsed on itself, exposed to the elements. The first instance of this jail showed up on a 1908 fire insurance map with the one prior in 1904 showing no jail in this location, putting its construction sometime between 1905-1908. With a growing city in the middle of the midwest and full of outlaws and bandits, the need for an OKC Jail was strong and wasn't going to subside anytime soon. Despite the desperate need, fears started to arise that bonds to build the new city jail wouldn't be passed if they were voted on separately. Constructed in 1936 with $1,170 of money appropriated by the WPA, the structure reminds me of a buff brick version of the Cowden Gym. Later it would be passed down to his son Rusty in the late 1980s. Hours were 7 days a week Mon-Sat 7 am-10 pm and 8 am-10 pm on Sundays. Keith's Korner and Quick Stop was the place to go for all your needs in town. Located right off of the highway it was perfect for those road tripping through the panhandle as a place to stop overnight, fuel up, or grab a bite to eat. In addition, they also auto repairman Leroy offered tire and auto repairs as well as oil changes. Tsa-La-Gi Amphitheater (PRIVATE PROPERTY) - https://abandonedok.com/tsa-la-gi-amphitheater/ (👈CLICK TO SEE 50+ PICTURES) Tsa-La-Gi Amphitheater was the second of a four-phase Cherokee Cultural Center on 44 acres in Tahlequah Oklahoma. The amphitheater was designed by CHC co-founder Charles "Chief" Boyd who had a degree in architecture. The amphitheater took on the shape of a fan with very steep seating surrounding a thrust stage in the center. Just behind the main stage were the dressing rooms and a prop mountaintop created using actual flora tieing in the beautiful nature surrounding the grounds....
