The Valliant Jail is in my opinion one of the most fun to take the family out on a trip to. Built in 1926 there is no doubt this historic jail holds many tales, some documented, most not.
The Oklahoma News December 26, 1938 – W.R. Pratt, 65, retired mail carrier, was killed when he was struck at a street crossing in Valliant. The driver of the car alleged to have struck Pratt is being held in the Valliant Jail.
New Version of Old Rope Trick Empties Jail July 8, 1942 – Three African Americans being held in the Valliant Jail, one for burglary of a Valliant house and two for drunkenness, broke out Saturday night. Deputy Sheriff Earl Allen stated this morning. The escape was discovered when Allen went to the jail with Night Marshal Jack McGehee to bring Frank Garland, the man charged with burglary, to the county jail.
The trio had tied a rope to a section of the metal wall and to some jail plumbing. With a stick they twisted the rope until it pulled the section of wall away. McGehee had called Allen to come after the prisoner. When the escape was discovered McGehee said, “Well we DID have him for you.” Deputy Sheriff Bud Butler later apprehended Garland and placed him in the county jail – without any rope.
Jailhouse Feed & Farm Supply
Today the jail is at the forefront of a family business called Jailhouse Feed & Farm Supply. The jail sits out front of the store and is often looked at and asked about by customers and passerbys.
