Depew Jail

City/Town:
Location Class:
Built: Unknown | Abandoned: Maybe 1951
Status: AbandonedPrivate Property
Photojournalist: Cathy Brock

The exact date of when the Depew Jail was constructed is unknown at this time, but what can be said is that it predates 1930 in construction.

Read along to some of the amazing stories I found documented about the Depew “City” Jail that could be this one below:

Bo Howard a Convicted Killer Saws His Way Out of Depew Jail January 17, 1938 – E.L. “Bo” Howard about 30, convicted murder and bank bandit suspect who was released from the state penitentiary at McAlester recently sawed through a steal hatch and escaped from the Depew City Jail early Sunday morning.

Howard was arrested Saturday on a drunk charge by Chief of Police Joe Wall, was released and rearrested late Saturday by Jerry Hazlett of the Depew police department. They said he became abusive when the officers agreed to allow him to leave the city.

The latch on the jail door which is about two inches wide and half inch thick was sawed cleanly by a hacksaw officers said. It was believed that the saw and an instrument used to force the door were slipped to Howard by someone from the outside. However, Hazlett said, Howard who was not thoroughly shaken down might have carried the saw into the jail concealed on his person.

Cops Hunt Two Who Broke Depew Jail March 7, 1939 – City and county officers were on the lookout Tuesday morning for three men reported by Jerry Haslit, city marshal at Depew to have broken jail there Saturday night by sawing out the bars.

The men were said to be Frank Hammond and Houston Hardwick being held for trial on misdemeanor charges and Voy Hall charged with driving while drunk. Hall was said by Haslit to be on furlough from the army post at Fort Sill.
