Little is known about the history of the Harjo Consolidated school. It was built in 1930 along with a residential house for the acting principal of the school. It sets on 5 hill top acres and includes the small house for the principal, a rock building used as the cafeteria that is still mostly intact, a storm shelter and an 8 classroom school with an auditorium and stage. There is an additional building that housed the restrooms and it is in disrepair. Also, there are the ruins of an old gymnasium that collapsed in on itself over a year ago. It is no longer, nor has it been for a long time, an Entertainment Center Spot, where athletes joined to play each other.
Recently the property was purchased with the hopes of restoring the buildings and using the property as a school for handicapped children. Unfortunately the funding to do so became unavailable and the future of the school is unknown.

My Grandmother was Ollie Maxwell Freeman Mauldin. Her stepsister, Lula Freeman, graduated from this school so I thought I'd check and see if anyone knows what became of Ollie? She married at 19 to Clementhe Mauldin, had two sons; Hubert Mauldin and Kenneth E. Mauldin (my father). I think she died shortly after her second child. Any info about Ollie would be most appreciated. Send to atp1682@yahoo.com

Hi. My family and I attended this school. I was in the first grade. I believe there were 3 classes in one room. Lots of memories there. 2 of my aunts attended there in high school. My family and my grandparents and 2 aunts lived on an 80-acre lease in the country and rode the bus to school. Some of the families in the area were: Foughty, Patterson, Lamirand, Jett, Moon and many more that I cannot remember. Garland Lucy was our bus driver and his wife worked in the lunch room. We attended basketball games and other activities in… Read more »
My dad went to this school as well. His name was Gene Cook. His grandfather was a schoolteacher at the one-room schoolhouse in the area and that’s where my dad’s parents (Ed Cook and Blanche Butler) met.

Thank you for taking all of the pictures of Harjo School. I went to school there from 1966-1967. I was in the 8th grade and gradutated from 8th grade there in the auditorium. The school inside does look a lot different., even the auditorium. I have an old picture of when I gradutated. There were extending steps across the front of the stage. They are like the ones in front of the doors except way longer. Also, the seating was metal chairs not the theater seats as shown. I really enjoyed going there. I was the queen of 8th grade… Read more »
Hello, My aunt was a taecher at Harjo school when she first started teaching and she lived one mile north od Dora hill, Dora hill is where the old Dora school was located in which my mother had her first teaching job.
Thanks, Luther.
Wow nothing like I remember. I went to church camp there in the late 70"s. Played a lot of basketball in that old gym. We would always sleep in the small building next to the main building. Remembered water had to be brought in. Sad to see it in such a mess.
harjo school, was owned by paul and maxine martin, until a couple of years ago, maxine passed away, and paul had to go back to texas where his son could take care of him. the couple purchased the property for church work , i knew them fairly well, and always appreciated the work done for the community. skwges@mbo.net^_^
