Checotah School

Checotah School

City/Town:
Location Class:
Built: 1927 | Abandoned: 1936
Status: Demolished
Photojournalist: David LindeTaylor Adney

Little about the Checotah School is known other than it was built in 1927 on the Northwest side of Okmulgee. Although the year 1927-28 was said to be “the best in the entire history of Checotah schools.” The building was abandoned shortly after in 1936 and was considered to be the site of a county hospital in the 50s. The Old Checotah School grounds held many pigskin player reunions and practices in the 1960s. After sitting for more than half a century the City of Okmulgee granted the Okmulgee Public Schools to retrieve the bricks from the Old Checotah School to use in their Harmon Stadium. The whole building is now demolished and houses have been built where it used to sit.

We are looking for anyone who knows anything else about the school and might have some historical pictures of it. If so contact board@abandonedatlas.com.

Samuel Checote (Checotah) was the first elected chief of the Creek tribe after the civil war. His family was relocated from Fort Mitchell, Alabama to Indian Territory on the Trail of Tears and they settled just west Okmulgee. Due to his leadership during the twelve years as chief, the Creek people underwent many moral and administrative changes. He was very revered in the Creek people even after his death in his Okmulgee home in 1884. The school was named in his honor.

Yeah, pic #39 is my favorite too. I would have taken more pics of the outside, but it was very overgrown with trees, so you really couldnt see the structure, which is a shame. And really, if you didnt know it was there, you can drive right by it and not even see it. I only like overgrown vegitation if its like vines or something that adds to the character to the building, in this case it just hindered my photos. Just another reason why I cant wait until winter hits and all this pesky green stuff dies off.

Why is a Checotah school in Okmulgee? Shouldn't it be in Checotah?
