Skedee Jail

City/Town:
Location Class:
Built: 1903 | Abandoned: N/A
Status: AbandonedEndangered
Photojournalist: Don Taylor

Located in tick-infested woods sits a lonely calaboose. The Skedee Jail has alluded people for decades slowly being reclaimed by nature in a disappearing town. This calaboose is special, it is one of the only remaining wood jails that still exists in its original location and is untouched. While there are upsides to that from a preservation standpoint there are also many downsides. Trees have grown up surrounding the building and secluding it from public view. This means any effort to preserve the structure unless moved to a more visible location, surely won’t happen.

The earliest date recognized for this jail is 1903 according to fire insurance maps. When studying the maps I was intrigued by the fact that the jail was so close to the former school located just down the street. Not the current school that sits abandoned in the town. And while the exact date of the jails abandonment is unknown it can be assumed from its condition and the population statistics of the town, which has only ever peaked at 235 people in 1940, that it probably was not used much in the first place and became unneeded around the decline of the population.
