“Hoosegow” comes from the American mispronunciation of the Mexican-Spanish word “juzgado” which means “the place where the (negatively) judged go”: namely, jail or prison. While hoosegow was not preferred over the word calaboose, this jail bears the name Geary Hoosegow.
Geary, Skedee, Chickasha, and the Darlington jail are the last remaining wood-frame calabooses, in Oklahoma. The Geary Hoosegow has been relocated to the Canadian Rivers Historical Museum and while it is protected under an awning the jail is looking like it might fall over any day.
