Built in 1912, this calaboose has so many more stories than are documented in online materials. But one story that I do have to share is one about a burglary near Tupelo.
The Coalgate Courier Feb 13, 1919 – Constable R.A. Harmon of Tupelo brought in Nathan Brown and Clem Richard, African Americans, charged with burglarizing the home of A.J. Dickinson, two and a half miles north of Tupelo on Monday night, and placed them in the county jail Wednesday night.
Brown was shot through the right shoulder and right foot at Atwoof by an officer in effecting his arrest. Two Mexicans were also arrested by Jesse Hays, city marshal of Allen, who are charged jointly with the burglary. They were turned over to Constable Harmon who brought them to Tupelo and placed them in the Tupelo jail. They broke jail that night and made their get-away. About $65 worth of clothing and money was reported taken.
